KRUDICO GREENSAND FILTERS
For Iron Manganese and Sulfur Removal

Krudico's Commercial Greensand Media is processed from glauonitic greensand which is coated with a layer of Manganese Dioxide. Manganese Dioxide removes iron and other inerts by three processes. First, the media is fine in size and the greensand works as a simple sand filter to remove inorganics above 30 micron in size. Secondly, the coating releases oxygen into the Ferrous (dissolved) ions enlarging them to the Ferric (precipitated) form. Third, the media acts as a catalyst which attracts the Ferric iron to the media and holds it until the media is backwashed.

The media needs a replacement source of oxygen which is accomplished by using a chemical feed pump to inject a pink solution of Potassium Permanganate into the influent water line in front of the filters. The Potassium Permanganate, because of it's oxygen content, starts the conversion from the Ferrous to the Ferric form. The excess Potassium Permanganate replenishes the oxygen that has been given up previously by the Manganese Dioxide coating. The effluent water leaving the filter is clear and should not have any excess pink color from the Potassium Permanganate when the chemical feed pump is set correctly.

These systems are excellent for small commercial and municipal systems where aeration is not feasible due to cost or space.
