NITRATE REDUCTION SYSTEM
 |
|
A
new building was constructed to house the advanced, 400 gallons
per minute nitrate reduction equipment supplied and installed in
late 1997 by Krudico professionals. Also located outside is the
salt storage tank which supplies an interior day storage tank with
a liquid or "wet" brine solution which is used for system
regeneration. |
| The
nitrate reduction system consists of three ion exchange vessels.
The system utilizes ion exchange and raw water blending to reduce
the nitrate levels to acceptable limits in the city water supply.
Located in the background behind operator Mike Hahn, is a day storage
tank for a wet brine solution. On the right of the photo is a liquid
chlorine storage room. |

The
Systemax 2000 programmable logic controller (PLC) is the electronic
device which controls the system. Some of the Systemax 2000's responsibilities
include demand meter input signal, regeneration time and sequence,
capacity, the chlorinator pump output signal, individual flow rates,
individual unit totalizer, and a variety of other programmable options.
Located next to the Systemax 2000 are two flow meters which monitor
the "treated" and "bypass" lines of the blended
system. |
| This
system utilizes the Fleck 3900 Dual Piston Metered Control Valve
and 63" diameter pressure vessels. The vessels have 2"
top and bottom ports for rapid loading and unloading. The process
piping consists of 6" influent/effluent headers and 3"
inlet/outlets on each of the valves. The Systemax 2000 is located
on the back wall of the building behind the vessels. |

An
aerial view of the plant allows one to view the PVC process piping
and supports. Also seen again is the day storage tank where liquid
brine is gravity fed from the outside storage tank. The liquid brine
is subsequently drawn into each tank by the control valves during
regeneration. |
| The
chlorine storage room is accessible from both inside and outside.
There are two 250 gallon storage tanks, one 13 gallon storage tank,
and a peristaltic chemical feed pump located in this room. The chemical
feed pump is controlled by the Systemax 2000 controller. The Systemax
turns the pump on during periods of water flow through the system,
and powers the pump down after flow has stopped. |

There
is a master meter located on the plant influent which monitors all
of the water that flows through the treatment plant. There is a
manual totalizer readout on the meter itself, and a digital readout
which indicates flow in Gallons Per Minute as well as the total
gallons through the meter. |
